Every successful lesson begins with one crucial element: clear lesson objectives.
Objectives are the starting point for planning, shaping the direction of the entire lesson, and ensuring that both teachers and students are aligned in their learning journey. Without well-defined objectives, a lesson risks becoming disjointed, unfocused, and ultimately may become less effective.
When planning a lesson, the objectives serve as the foundation for everything that follows—activities, assessments, discussions, and even classroom management strategies. They help teachers stay on track, ensuring that each part of the lesson is purposeful and aligned with the broader goals of the curriculum.
Below, you’ll find a PowerPoint presentation designed to guide teachers (mainly aimed at new teachers) through the process of writing clear, measurable, and achievable lesson objectives. This is designed to help craft lesson objectives that set students up for success and keep lessons focussed and effective.
I’ve started these with how I would distinguish between outcomes and objectives; it’s very important that you have a shared language across the school.
Lesson Objectives are a part of assessment for learning, which you can find some information on here.
