What is Dual Coding?

Dual coding is a learning theory that suggests students can better understand and retain information when it’s presented using both visual and verbal (words can be written or spoken) formats simultaneously. By combining words with visuals students can create more connections in their brains, leading to deeper understanding and improved recall.

Dual coding isn’t just a tool for teaching but also an effective revision and study strategy for students. When students actively engage in dual coding whilst revising, they can significantly improve their retention and retrieval of key concepts.
